Pastor shot dead in India/Churches in Ukraine and Moldova fight back with love
Published: Thu, 03/31/22
We firstly want to wish all the mothers a belated happy Mothers Day. Originally our newsletter was scheduled to go out for the special day but unfortunately I caught a bout of the flu and things got a little delayed. Even then I hope all the mothers had a special day, and I share a short account of the wonderful day I had with my family, celebrating the traditional Mothering Sunday (celebration of a personal 'mother church'), in tandem with a more modern Mothers Day
service. Read more (here).
The war in Ukraine is such a traumatic event it's dominating many of our prayers. Disturbing images of the devastation caused by the Russian shelling of cities, bring to life the reality and futility of war. Unfortunately, the human suffering that the rest of the world are condemning, seems to have no impact on Putin. We call on people to pray for a swift resolution and end to war that we might all rejoice and sing praises with our brothers and sisters in Ukraine soon.
"Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises." James 5:13
Already we are serving our first Ukrainian refugees at our 'Meals for the Homeless' project (click here) and we continue to inform local refugee centres about our services. You can donate towards this work which is now providing food, clothes, sanitary products and more to almost 60 different visitors each week. To donate
simply click (here). Please also pray for Juliet Chowdhry who may need a third operation on her right arm which was broken and dislocated during a BACA Youth Trip to Barking Abbey in 2019. Read more (click here).
The plight of Ukrainian citizens has affected our group and we have established links with a Church in Moldova and one in Odessa, Ukraine, who are both providing support to Ukrainian refugees as they escape the war and seek asylum. Pastor Vasilev is a Russian Pastor in Ukraine and has bravely stayed in Odessa believing God has a purpose for him during this war which is to stay and provide aid and to continue sharing the Gospel. In a video filmed days after the war started he said:
"Pray for God's will to be done in this place and at this moment.
"God has always wanted to save souls and his plan has never been changed.
"Pray for the salvation of Russians, it might sound radical to you but the greatest weapon we have is not sanctions but the truth of the Gospel.
"Jesus said 'when they know the truth, the truth shall make them free' and that's what they need."
He calls for prayers for his family especially for God's wisdom and help, to bring Ukrainians to Christ. You can learn more about their work and hear directly from some of those that they have helped by clicking (here). Please donate (here). We
will be posting regular updates on the work of both churches while the war continues and how funding is being used.
We wrote about the racism faced by black and Asian people leaving Ukraine in our last newsletter. The Government of Ukraine have now admitted this happened and have been working with international embassies to help these beleaguered people out. From latest accounts it would seem most if not all of them have now been evacuated. Moreover, help by India to citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh has built bridges between these nations. Some naturalised Bangladeshi's living in
Ukraine have chosen to stay and fight with their white counterparts evidencing how not all experiences have been bitter. Read more (here)
PAKISTAN:
Even in times of war in Europe persecution of Christians continues in Pakistan, sadly we had our lowest yield of donations ever this month, but were able to meet our ongoing costs after an insurance claim came through. We believe donations may have reduced because some of have chosen to give to Ukraine appeals. We understand that completely, but hope more of you are able to commit to a monthly donation, which would help us plan our operational spend more efficiently.
Three Muslim friends decided to terrorise a Christian community by shouting abuse at them. One man then climbed onto a Church roof, sat on a cross and swayed on it with intent to break it - causing himself to fall off. He landed 40ft below without breaking any bones but severely winded and bruised. It was the church who rushed to help him, forgiving him for his abuse but ensuring the police took action to prevent a recurrence. Read more and watch videos (here).
LahoreHigh Court have rejected a quashment (Pakistani legal term for cancellation) application for Nabeel Masih who was 16 when imprisoned for blasphemy, even though it was in their jurisdiction, It seems they are waiting for the District court to do the right thing. Read more (here). It costs horrendous amounts of money to support Nabeel and his family while we await his acquittal and protect him while out on bail. You can donate towards the cost of his legal cover and safety (here)
We remind you of our desire to provide long term support to the widows of the brave sewage workers who died saving a comrade. If you would like to contribute towards their assistance you can donate (here)
As always we have some good news to share:
We managed to raise the funds necessary to replace Aleeza Masih's prosthetic limb again. Aleeza was only 1.5 when her bowels and left leg suffered severe damage from Shrapnel from a terrorist attack while at a church in Quetta. You can see her walking, running and playing on her new limb in some heart-warming videos (here).
We are aware that many of you have been wondering about what was happening with our project to get 10 year old Soojal into a school. This bright, caring and eager orphan has a desire to study but was being thwarted by his uncles who want him to work. His mother Shareefa had got him employment from the age of 8yrs old (which we did not condone) after his brother died, as she could not meet regular household costs, but he also went to school. However, since she died from grief
when the rapists and murderers of her 10 year old son escaped justice, Soojal found himself moving from house to house amongst his uncles and aunts and being put back to work with no education. After agreeing to allow us to pay for a boarding school for Soojal, the uncles later hid him from us, until we threatened to inform the Child Protection Bureau (not that we believe they would have helped much). Yesterday we got Soojal back into school and onto a programme that will get
him back on track with his education. Read more (here). We are going to need some regular donations to maintain his education for a period of longevity. Moreover he has regular living expense that need to be covered and we would to contribute significantly towards these, to prevent
his uncles sending him out to work. You can donate towards his schooling and living expenses (here).
THAILAND REFUGEES:
We have begun a regular grant programme for Pak-Christian asylum-seekers in Thailand. Our latest distribution is providing them with additional support during a very difficult economic situation, post-COVID lockdown. Read more (here)
INDIA:
The brutal killing of Pastor in his home has created fear amongst Christians of Bijapur, India. The men who undertook the attack are unidentified and there seem to be no clues that can lead to their arrest. This is a really disturbing time for Christians in the area and we call you to pray for him. Please be aware that some of the images in our post are quite graphic. Read more (click here).
Pastor Besra who survived a violent knife attack is now recovering well thanks to hospital payments funded by your donations. Read more (click here).
We thank you for those emails back from potential new volunteer writers. We will be sharing more details with all of you this week in preparation for the next newsletter. If there are others that would also like to join our writing team please email us on admin@britishasianchristians.org.
Blessings

Few people know the origins of Mothers Day, however it originally began in the UK as Mothering Sunday and was a day for celebrating your ‘Mother Church’ – the church of your baptism where you became a child of God.
The festival was held on the 4th Sunday of lent starting sometime in the medieval period, and many people would visit the church were they began their life with God.
In the early 1900’s a woman named Anna Jarvis, organized the first Mother’s Day service of worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. This was followed by Constance Adelaide Smith of the UK, in 1913, who revived the modern observance of Mothering Sunday to honour Mother Church, ‘mothers of earthly homes’, the Virgin Mary (mother of Jesus), and Mother Nature.

Brother of murdered 10 year old, whose mother died from grief will now attend school
Soojal (10 yrs) wants to study and declares it before uncles who want him to work.
Badil Masih was sodomised and murdered by his employer Mr Mohammed Ikram and a cohort, in July 2019, for daring to seek full payment for work he had carried out at a scrapyard.
British Asian Christian Association stepped in to pay for legal costs, and support the family financially as they challenged for justice. Despite clear evidence of a crime courts offered pre-arrest bail to the murderers who began to threaten the Christian family and key witnesses.
Though Badil’s mother Shareefa remained stoic throughout the court process. The witnesses were nobbled by the murderers and their cohorts. They refused to testify and threatened to alter their statement if Shareefa continued to pursue justice. It is not known whether they succumbed to bribes, threats or both.
In tandem with the ignominy of losing witnesses Shareefa suffered intensified threats of the murder of her remaining son. Unbeknown to British Asian Christian Association or our solicitor, Shareefa met in private with the opponent solicitor and agreed compensation terms for the murder of her son.
The pain of her betrayal led to Shareefa dying from grief. Her remaining son Soojal (10 yrs) has been shunted between homes of maternal and paternal uncles and BACA attempted to place him in a boarding school.
For over two years British Asian Christian Association have been providing free meals for homeless people, the economically deprived and refugees and asylum-seekers.
We can serve up to 40 people a day and with the help of partner groups such as Westminster Drug Project we are even able to provide free counselling. The NHS also occasionally undertake Hepatology tests at our centre.
This month we have begun to see a rise in the number of visitors to our centre, which now includes members of new migrants from the Afghan and Ukrainian refugees communities.
Margareta who stayed at the Odessa church is now off to Italy to flee the war.
The war in Ukraine shocked people across the globe when it began despite attempts at diplomacy. The first major war on European soil since the Bosnian War in the 1990’s.
The war has now been raging for almost a month and shows no signs of letting up, despite severe international sanctions being placed on Russia and their wealth oligarchs by most of the rest of the world.
Diplomatic meetings between Russia and Ukraine have yielded little hope for an early end to the war.
The Christian Church has not stayed silent on the attacks which have been condemned by all churches, including some of the Russian Orthodox leaders.
Pope Francis has labelled the Ukraine war as a “senseless massacre” he has demanded that wold leaders bring and end to the carnage. Prayers have been regularly said in Catholic Churches across the globe and the Pope has called for people to pray for an end to war. Read more (here)
The Archbishop of Canterbury and Archbishop of York labelled the war as ‘an act of great evil,’ Anglican churches have been dedicating prayers to Ukraine since the outset of war too. Read more (here).
Ethnic Minority Racism by shell-shocked populace admitted by Ukrainian officials
We reported on the prayers being said across churches around the globe after President Putin of Russia began a war in Ukraine, in an earlier post. In the same post we also shared the sacrifice being made by an Irish missionary couple, who chose to remain in Ukraine despite the threat to their safety. Read more (here).
That said, we later also shared a very disturbing account of how black and Asian students and citizens of Ukraine were receiving prejudicial treatment, during their attempts to flee the war. Evidence of the ‘different treatment’ was highlighted globally when United Nations’ high commissioner for refugees, Filippo Grandi, spoke out about it. Read more and watch videos (here).
Having spoken directly with foreign students we have discovered that at many border locations, white Ukrainians were being asked to join a priority queue, Asians a second priority queue and blacks a third priority queue. Though we condemn this process, it has not in anyway reduced our desire to support Ukrainians who suffer many violent atrocities in an unprovoked war. We however pray for peace in Ukraine and an end to racism across the globe.
A senior Pastor was brutally shot dead and then had his neck sliced open by six Hindu extremist assassins, whilst at home.
The attack in the village of Anganpalliguda, Bhopalpatnam/Taluk, in Bijapur District, Chhattisgarh State was witnessed by his terrified daughter-in-law.
After the murderers had left the property one returned some 30 seconds later to stab the Pastor in the heart just to make sure he was dead. A macabre act that illustrates the extent of hatred that can manifest towards Christians in India.
Muslim antagonist of Christian community calls friends to help him flee with friend injured from attempted church vandalism.
A Muslim fanatic climbed onto a church roof and chanted Islamic verses as he tried to terrorise a local community while vandalising a large cross.
In his attempt to wrench the large cross from the church he fell off the building and was nursed by the Christians who gave him water and placed him on a charpai (rope bed), to help him recover while police arrived.
You can watch his attempts to destroy the church while uttering Islamic chants here.
After we had a surge of donations last month we were able to put the money to good use serving an additional 10 Pak-Christin asylum-seeker families in Thailand.
Last month we initially shared food with 20 families then made a decision to provide 1000 baht to each of the families that we serve, as the costs for delivering food parcels became too expensive.
We share details at the end of this post of the 20 families that have benefitted from our recent distribution. The money will help towards rent and food and we would like to support more families desperate for some help in an increasingly difficult economy, where through no fault of their own they have been deemed illegal immigrants.
We reported on the stabbing incident of Pastor Narendra Besra (46 yrs) that occurred on February 4, 2022. He took several stab and slash wounds to his shoulder chest, hand, and head in a possible murder/assassination attempt.
The attack occurred while staying over night in a village called Baghima-Pahantoli , where he had been visiting church members(click here).
Nabeel Masih and Advocate Naseeb Anjum at Pattoki Court
After three years in prison and many failed appeals while under the care of other Christian charities, Nabeel chose to seek help from British Asian Christian Association.
BACA were able secure bail for Nabeel within a year allowing him freedom from his 4 year incarceration.
Since then BACA have been fighting for his acquittal and were shocked when the courts refused his absence from proceedings despite the risk to his life. In tandem we are seeking help from western nations with the hope of providing asylum for Nabeel in a country that is safe.
In our last report we explained that the judge was being extremely lenient to the counsel for the accuser and permitted a postponement based on papers having been left at his office.
There has also been a third judge change which we believe has arisen because of the religious sensitivity of the previous judge. We bring you up to date since our last report:
