Urgent Appeal: Thousands of Indian Christians still internally displaced/2 more blasphemy arrests in Pakistan Dear all,
Since our last newsletter, the situation
in Manipur, India, has significantly deteriorated. In early August, firearms were stolen from police armories, including semi-automatic weapons. Tragically, these stolen firearms have been wielded by Hindu Militia to launch attacks against the Christian Kuki community. This wave of violence has resulted in the loss of more than 250 Christian lives. Disturbingly, Christian men have been compelled to utilize firearms typically reserved for hunting animals to defend their communities. This dire situation has led to casualties on both sides of the conflict. Despite the imposition of martial law in the region, security forces are grappling to regain control over the escalating
crisis (click here). In this tumultuous environment, British Asian Christian Association (BACA) remains committed to providing assistance. Currently, we are actively engaged in providing sustenance to two Christian institutions that have now
transformed into relief camps for the displaced population. As families are forced to flee their homes in search of safety, BACA is dedicated to ensuring that these individuals have access to essential food supplies and the support they urgently need. In Pakistan, following the incidents of church burnings and destruction of Christian homes in Jaranwala (click here), the majority of the impacted families have chosen to return to their homes. This decision comes as a
result of the Government of Pakistan's commitment to provide compensation grants of 2 million Pak-rupees to those affected. This stands in contrast to past situations where Christians, who were subjected to similar attacks, such as the cases of Shanti-Nagar in 1997 and Gojra in 2009, did not return to their homes and received no compensation. BACA provided food and shelter to hundreds of Christians during the turmoil (click here). The heightened international attention focused on the hardships faced by the Christian community appears to have prompted the government to take decisive action. This shift is notable as it demonstrates a departure from previous norms, wherein affected families were left without recompense and often felt compelled to abandon their homes due to security concerns. Additionally, in the following updates, we present information regarding two new instances of blasphemy charges in Pakistan, that have emerged subsequent to the attack in Jaranwala. Furthermore, we address the recent incident involving the stabbing of three Christian men who bravely
intervened to thwart a fraudulent land seizure orchestrated by a Muslim land mafia group (click here). We are also pleased to provide an update on the case of 7-year-old Javeria. Her brave testimony has proven pivotal in identifying her kidnapper and assailant, thereby bolstering the ongoing police investigation and the forthcoming prosecution case. This significant development marks a step forward in the pursuit of
justice for Javeria. Read more (here). There is an update on our help for Christian asylum seekers in
Thailand too (click here) Several of our dedicated supporters have expressed their desire for us to initiate a public protest as a display of solidarity with the Christian communities in Manipur and Jaranwala. Notably, there have been several successful protests arranged by the
community, including events in Wales, Nottingham, London (click here), Manchester (click here), and Scotland. In line with this, we are in the process of planning a more extensive and collaborative protest, encompassing participation from both Indian and Pakistani Christian communities. We extend a heartfelt invitation to all members of the broader Christian community and individuals with a strong moral compass to stand with us in unity during this crucial moment.
